Gross harvest of Ukrainian wheat will be reduced by 4% by the end of 2017

According to the assessment of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), world production of grain in 2016 amounted to 2.600 MMT, which is 66.2 MMT (2.6%) more than the result of the last year. It has been reported that the production of grain in Ukraine amounted to 65.4 MMT, which is an increase of 9% over the same period of the last year. At the same time, gross wheat harvest, on the contrary, fell by 2% to 26.0 MMT.

The total volume of grain production on the territory of the CIS countries in 2016 amounted to 193 MMT, which exceeded the high results of the previous year by 12%. Growth was achieved due to an increase in gross wheat harvest, primarily in Russia, where the harvest of this crop in 2016 was 73.3 MMT (+18%), offsetting the decline in production in other countries of the region, particularly in Ukraine (-2%).

According to FAO, in Ukraine, the total area under winter grains in the current season has amounted to 6.1 MMT (-1% compared to last year”s figures). As reported, by the end of winter, about 80% of the crops were in good or in satisfactory condition. Thus, by the end of 2017, FAO analysts forecast a decline in gross wheat harvest in Ukraine by 4% to 25 MMT.
